Is Social Media Good for Teens?

Social media are interactive technologies that allow the creation or sharing/exchange of information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. In this era, people usually use social media as a main activity especially teenagers.

Social media is a way for teenagers to stay in touch with their friends. They have always talked after school, long before social media, hanging out at the bus stop, at the local park, chatting on the phone, now they just have a different platform to do so. It is an important part of socialising and connection in the modern world. Teenagers and social media use is increasing, the main reasons teenagers regularly use social media.

Many positive benefits that teenagers get from using social media. They can strengthen the relationship of friendship and also related to science. It also adding insight into thinking and knowledge through social media. They can provide precise and accurate information, such as information about universities, job vacancies or scholarships, and others. Provide space for positive roles such as communication with religious leaders, scholars, or motivators and familiarize friendships, communication for meetings, meetings or social gatherings.

But from all the positive benefits, it doesn’t mean that there’s no negative effects from social media. Young people report that there might be good reason to worry. A survey conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health asked 14-24 year olds in the UK how social media platforms impacted their health and wellbeing. The survey results found that Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all led to increased feelings of depression, anxiety, poor body image and loneliness.

The worst case of negative effects from socia media is from cyberbullying to suicide cases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people with approximately 4,400 deaths every year. 2The CDC estimates that there are at least 100 suicide attempts for every suicide among young people. More than 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide and nearly 7 percent have attempted it, that is why you will, sadly, read about cyberbullying cases in the media now more than ever.

To sum up, social media has a good and bad effects on teenager, it could gives them a positive benefits, or it could lead them to a negative effect that’s dangerous, so i think social media could be a good or bad thing depends on the person.
