HELEN KELLER BIOGRAPHY

Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27th, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, United States. She's a daughter of Arthur Keller and Kate Adams Keller. She was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. The story of Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan, was made famous by Keller's autobiography, The Story of My Life, and its adaptations for film and stage, The Miracle Worker.

Actually Helen was born as a normal person. Drastic changes began to occur when she was only 19 months old, Helen contracted a disease that attacks her stomach and her brain, and the doctors predicted that she would not survive for a long time. But apparently the reality said otherwise, Helen managed to get out of a critical state. However, she had to lose three very important things in her life, namely her hearing, speaking, and seeing.

Feeling frustrated by her limited communication skills, it made Helen Keller get angry easily and rage. Helen's parents then hired Anne Sullivan as a personal tutor. Sullivan taught her how to read the alphabet by forming the letters in Keller's hands. At first Helen Helen did not understand because she did not recognize the alphabetical form in her memory. But Sullivan's unique way of teaching made Keller quickly grasp it. Sullivan often brought Helen to touch objects she would teach. Helen Keller was very pleased with the way Sullivan taught and she always remembered it

The next lesson received by Helen was reading, Mrs. Sullivan introduced Helen to Latin letters using cardboard, and continued to study words through books, not only that, Mrs. Sullivan also introduced poetry and beautiful stories through finger movements, Helen also began to broaden her horizons to get to know the world by taking the courage to do adventures in the wild accompanied by Mrs. Sullivan and his sister Mildred.

Helen's desire to move forward was increasingly unstoppable. She wants to do something that is not possible for the one who blind, deaf, and mute like her. She wants to learn to talk. Under the guidance of Sarah Fuller, Helen began to be introduced to the voice, Mrs. Fuller placed Helen's hand on her face and let Helen know the position of her lips and tongue when she spoke. Helen tried hard to be able to talk, she had the hope that one day people would understand what she wanted to say. Under the guidance of Mrs. Fuller Helen's ability began to develop, she not only learned how to read lip movements, but she also studied various subjects such as arithmetic, physics, geography, french and germany.

Since then Helen began aspiring to receive education up to university level. To reach her goals, Helen has to go through a variety of severe obstacles, ranging from the difficulty of adapting to her classmates who are in fact "normal people", to the teacher's doubt about her ability to take lessons like other students, never dampening Helen's intention to continue to reach her dreams.

Thanks to the guidance of Mrs. Sullivan and those who loved her, Helen managed to graduate in just 4 years from Radcliffe University in 1904 with the title magna cum laude. She was listed as the first blind and deaf person who was able to complete her education up to university level, and not only that, Helen also managed to become a writer and was always active in humanitarian activities to help "needy" people like her.

Helen won the Honorary University Degrees Women's Hall of Fame, The Presidential Medal of Freedom, The Lions Humanitarian Award, and even her life story won 2 Oscars. She wrote articles and famous books, including "The World I Live In" and "The Story of My Life" (typed in ordinary letters and Braille), which became classic literature in America and translated into 50 languages. She traveled to 39 countries to talk with presidents, raising funds for blind and deaf people. She founded the American Foundation for the Blind and the American Foundation for the Overseas Blind.
